In Pokkisham, Padmapriya pairs up with Cheran for the second time; they have worked together earlier in Thavamaai Thavamirundu. Padmapriya, who has a penchant to learn new things all the time, has decided to make the most of her participation in a film directed by Cheran, whom she regards highly as a director. Every morning Padmapriya is present on the sets of Pokkisham exactly at 7:00 a.m. - well before her schedule - to assist Cheran in his directorial work.

Speaking about this, Padmapriya said she has always been creatively inclined and always wanted to present her thoughts in a convincing manner. She thinks film direction gives her ample scope to convey her ideas in a better way, and that is the reason she wanted to learn this art. She said that she is quite lucky to be getting an on-the-job training directly from a master of the trade.

This is not something new to Padmapriya as she had been almost an assistant director to Cheran in Thavamaai Thavamirundhu.

So it will not be surprising when Padmapriya announces her plans to direct a film one day!

A while ago, the media was full of news that Ileana was to make a foray into Tamil movies but it seems that is not to be. We learn that Ileana will not be on board the animated Rajini starrer Sultan. She turned down Soundarya Rajnikanth’s offer, citing reasons that may be connected to remuneration, say insiders. She may have also felt that she would not have much to do in a Rajni movie.

Inside sources feel that Ileana can take a leaf out of the books of all actresses who worked with Rajinikanth; they have all gone on to become major stars. Even yesteryear heroine Meena has got plenty of plum offers after her role in Kuselan/ Kathanayakudu.

Recently, there were two photo shoots of Robot, which were held at AVM Studios wherein Rajini was snapped in various getups. These photos will be used for the pre-shooting promotion of the film. Shankar and Ayngaran have decided to take the film worldwide like big Hollywood movies. The film will also hit the North Indian screens with equal number of prints going to be released in Tamil.

Shankar says in an interview to an upcountry magazine, "For a regional language like Tamil or Telugu, Shivaji is really a grandeur film. But Robot targets worldwide market. The film is differs in every aspect from Shivaji. The budget, making style and marketing strategy, are totally different and I’m sure the film will reach a new high not only in Superstar Rajini’s career, but in the history of Indian Cinema."

Genelia started out featuring in an ad for the product Fair and Lovely. Impressed with her performance in the commercial, director Shankar cast her in ’Boys’ and then the floodgates opened for her. She then starred in many Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films.

Genelia paired with Vijay in the film ’Sachin’ and then tasted sweet success playing a naïve and yet sweet girl in ’Santhosh Subramanaiam’.The Tamilnadu Artistes’ Association had in fact informed her to become a member many times but failed to receive any communication from her. An official letter has now been sent to her underscoring the point of a possible ban.

Many of the actors who featured in ’Chennai 600028’ have also been dispatched letters as they too have not yet become members of the association.Interestingly, actresses Nayantara, Trisha and Priyamani became members very recently after pressure for the association.

I can consider this to be my identity”, she says.

According to source Mani Ratnam’s production company Madras Talkies is in the final round of negotiation for huge Rs.120 Crore deal with the Anil Ambani run Reliance Entertainment Big Picture, for negative rights of all the three versions. According to close sources from the industry, if this deal happens, it will be the biggest ever for a South Indian Film.

Mani Sir as he is known in Kollywood, has been working on this script ever since the release of his super hit Guru in Jaunary, 2007.

Reportedly the Hindi version will have Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai in the lead and Govinda in a negative role. The Telugu and Tamil versions will have Vikram in the male lead, while Aishwarya will be the common heroine in all three languages.

He is teaming up with the photographer and friend-partner of his earlier ventures (Aalayam), PC Sreeram and his own discovery AR Rahman.

Remember that in all his films, Dhanush has done comedy himself or had little known comedians with him. So when Vadivel was signed up in his latest film Padikkathavan it was news. But now the twist in the tale is that Vadivel has been dropped by the unit like a hot potato as “he was too difficult to handle”.

In fact Vadivel, the highest paid comedian ( Rs 7 Lakhs per day!) shot for two days in Hyderabad when he started throwing his weight with director Suraaj. A source close to the unit say that Vadivel was unhappy about the comedy track written for him with Dhanush including a scene which had the hero beating him.

After all, how can the king of comedy get beaten by a young hero when he says that superstars like Rajnikanth and Vijay waits for his dates, pleads with him to come on time and is treated like a hero himself on their sets! When a section of the press voiced this to the director of the film Rajashekar, during a press meet held recently, he categorically denied forcing Nayantara into appearing sexy in the film.

’The story needed the female lead to be glamorous and I had made this point very clear when I narrated the story to her’ said Rajashekar.Nayantara plays a daring television journalist in the film and her relationship with a top cop adds on the fuel to her investigation as well as the police department’s hunt for the baddies.

’Nayantara is a thorough professional and took it upon herself to do justice to the role’ Rajashekar added.The film is slated for release on August 15 as ’Sathyam’ in Tamil and ’Salute’ in Telugu. What started as a four-Crore budget went on to a whopping cost of 23 Crores. About 600 prints are being made available for the release.

Vijay’s dad S. A. Chandrasekhar is directing a film called ’Pandhayam’ with Nithin Sathya donning the lead role. Vijay will be playing himself in the film as a guest performer. Since he plays himself, he will be depicted as though he is shooting for a film under the direction of Perarasu. And that film’s title is ’MGR’.

The scene was shot in Chennai recently. Nithin Sathya, the hero of ’Pandhayam’ plays a die-hard Vijay fan in the film and so goes to see Vijay shooting for a movie. Prakash Raj and Sindhu Thulani also are in the cast. Vijay Anthony has scored the music.

Paruthi Veeran received accolades for being Isaiyaruvi Album of the Year and Best Best Folk Song (Oororam). Best Lyricist Award went to Vairamuthu for Kaatrin Mozhi in Mozhi, which also gave Balaram the Best Singer Award. Harris Jayaraj received two awards for Best Youth Album (Unaale Unaale) and Hello FM listeners’ Choice (Unaale Unaale). Chithra was awarded Best Female Singer for Yaaro Yaaro from Chennai 600028, which also won an award for Miranda Crazy Song of the Year (Saroja Saamaan Nikalo).

Among the new comers, Shweta Mohan and Benny were awarded Best Singers, actress Rohini was Best Lyricist for Pachaikili Muthucharam, and GV Prakash Kumar was Best Music Director. "Hollywood actor James Caviezel who played Jesus in Passion of the Christ may act in our film as Jesus. Some other Hollywood actor will play St. Thomas," says Dr Paulraj Lourdusamy, chief researcher and script-writer of the film. "An important part of the film is St. Thomas’ meeting with sage poet Thiruvalluvar. We thought Rajinikanth would fit that role perfectly. We are trying to rope him in for the project," Paulraj adds.

Dr Paulraj, who has three doctorates earned from various foreign universities, spent one year in libraries across the world to find the existing literature on St. Thomas. Well-versed in French, he did the script in French first and then in English. The film will be made in Tamil and Malayalam first and will then be dubbed in Hindi. The shoot will be conducted in Idukki and Munnar region in Kerala which still preserves the 2,000-year old bio diversity intact.

Charmi was all smiles and lauded the efforts of the director in believing in his project and seeing it through some very tough times. At one time the movie was almost shelved but Prabu was convinced about the viability of the project and made it possible.

Charmi plays the role of Angel, a very positive character with a strong comical streak. “I hope this film will give me the right break in Tamil. My role has immense scope to perform and I had the opportunity of imitating many actors which I have not done even in Telugu industry so far.”, says the actress sporting her famous smile.

There is also a lip lock in the film which was shot in one take but “from seven angles” clarified Charmi. The director Prabu praised Charmi saying “she was as co-operative as any technician through this film and did not behave like a star. She will be seen in a new light after this film.” He thanked producers JP Kumar and DY Chowdary and had also a word of praise for debutant cameraman Sukumar who has “done an excellent job in the film”.

According to Prabu Solomon the movie is an unusual one indeed. It has no conventional love story angle but is about a girl and a boy who are good friends and how they help each other in certain tough situations in their life. The team is sure that Ladam is going to be a path breaking film in Tamil.

Aravindan is the new hero whose tagline in the film’s promos reads, “they called him cockroach”. Though Charmi kept jocularly referring to him as Karupamboochi through out, he seemed to take no offence and explained that his role was about an innocent guy who is trapped into certain situations. Dharan has done the music, and one of the songs is written by journalist Eknath.

Even before the release of her film Gajini with Amir Khan, Asin has signed her second Bollywood flick London Dreams with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. The pretty actress’ first commercial success Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi in 2003 had won her a Filmfare Award for the Best Telugu Actress and a few critically and commercially successful films later she also picked up her second South Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in her second Tamil film, Gajini).

Industry sources say the actress pays huge attention to the director and the actor. Amongst those she’s worked with are Surya, Vijay, Vikram, Ajith, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh. And with the new attention she’s enjoying she’s taking longer to say ‘yes’!

After scouting in Vietnam for selecting the backdrops to shoot the movie, the film crew was back in Chennai recently. Rajinikanth is now expected to join the crew to commence work in a Motion Capture Animation Studio in Hyderabad to shoot for the movie. It would be later animated.

Motion Capture technology entails the artist to be fitted with infra red lights that can be tracked on the computer. All the actions performed by the actor would then be applied to the 3D model. Incredibly, the 3D model (designed just like Rajinikanth) would do exactly the same actions that the star performs in the studio. Movies like ’Titanic’ used this technology with stuntmen in studios and later adapted on live action sequences (people washed away by water) to get the stunning scenes as real as possible.

’Sultan - The Warrior’ has five songs set to tunes by A R Rahman and it would be released next february. The movie is being produced and directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth for her home production house Ocher Studios.

Speaking on the occasion, director-actor Bhagyaraj urged the actors to respect assistant and associate directors.’According to reports, a disturbing trend prevails in Kollywood today as the popular actors are determined to do movies only for popular film-makers. Had I not been encouraged by directors like Bharathiraja, I would not make it this far. The talent matters and not the experience’.

The function was attended by K Balachander, Bharathiraja, Mahendran, Balu Mahendra, S P Muthuraman, S A Chandrasekar, R Sunderarajan, P Vasu, Dharani, Vikraman, K S Ravikumar, Murugadoss among others.The album has five songs which includes a couple of songs inspired by Rahman’s composition from his Hindi film Meenakshi (Chinama Chilakama).

Two songs were screened on the occasion. The first copy was released by Rahman’s mother and was received by the artistes and technicians of ‘Sakkarakatti’.Speaking on the occasion, Rahman said, ’when Kalaprabhu approached me to work in ‘Sakkarakatti’, I declined the offer as I was really busy. But Kalaprabhu insisted that I should work in the movie’.

Tamil Film Producer Council president Rama Narayanan also spoke on the occasion.

When asked about her chances in Rajinikanth’s forthcoming mega movie Robot, the actress says, "Rajini sir is the greatest actor in India. His greatness is that he stays young always. I never felt like acting with a man who is double my age. And I hope I will get a chance in his forthcoming films if there was any suitable role for me".

How does this karate-kicking kid feel about working down south? "My best friend is Tamilian and her mom makes it a point to talk to me in Tamil!” she explains. Returning to her core theme she adds, “The other day, I watched a Tamil film in which a young hero - I don’t remember his name - did a brilliant job as an action hero. That’s the kind of passion that I would like to exhibit in my roles.”

And how did she get into karate in the first place, so unlike a typical model? "As I’m tall, I’ve always been into sports like kabaddi. Most of my friends are into karate and introduced me to it. The last four years have been a journey,” she explains. What does she think about Chennai, the home of Kollywood? “I never expected this sort of wild partying,” she says. “Nightlife in Chennai is much better than Bangalore or Hyderabad.”

While speaking on this matter, Shreya said that she is really happy and excited about her name being discussed for Marmayogi, and like all heroines of Kollywood, she too wants to act alongside Kamal Haasan. She is not confident that she would be able to accept Marmayogi or any other film at present. She quipped she is looking for a miracle to happen which will enable her to act in Marmayogi despite her overloaded call sheet.

Both Simbu and Nayantara somehow make it to headlines no matter how docile they are. But then, can both be docile for long….probably not. Kuselan audio has been grabbed by Big Music, after a bidding war. The grapevine has it that the price paid is a whopping Rs 2.25 crore, the highest ever price paid for an audio in Tamil. Big Music is opening the audio sales with a record 2 lakhs CD’s and Cassettes, priced at Rs 99 and 45 respectively. They have already got an order for 1.15 units from dealers across the world.

The other major highlight is the Daler Mehndi song along with Chitra and Sadhana Sargam, "Om Zaarare…" written by Vaali. It is a seven - minute song where Rajini and Nayanthara appear as Egyptian King and Queen ,and shot lavishly on a studio set done by Thotta Tharani.

She played the second female lead opposite Shivaraj Kumar in director Naganna’s recently released Kannada film "Bandhu Balaga"."I made a foray into the Tamil film industry after I got married. Now, I am here to work in a Kannada film," she said.Jyothirmayi, who has acted opposite Malayalam superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty, says an actress is just like any other working woman.

"I don’t think that an actress is different from other girls who continue their career after marriage. We also have the same feelings and run our family like any other ordinary person. For an actress, there is nothing wrong in getting married when she is at the peak of her career," she quipped.After doing a diploma in public relations and journalism from the Kerala Press Academy, Jyothirmayi started out as an anchor for Asianet and City Channel. Then she acted in a few serials and walked the ramp as well. Her first big screen venture was the 2000 Malayalam film "Pilot".

Jyothirmayi says that fans have now matured and can differentiate between the personal and professional life of an actress."When I did an item number in ’Idhaya Thirudan’ directed by Sharan, many people thought that audience would not accept an item song from a married actress. And the song became popular.

"I worked as one of the heroines in the recently released film ’Naan Avanillai’ and it was a big hit. My first Tamil film ’Thalainagaram’ was also a big hit. I am happy that the Tamil film industry has whole-heartedly accepted me. I am sure even the Kannada film industry will also accept me."Incidentally, Jyothirmayi has played a character with negative shades in "Bandhu Balaga".

"Yes, the character has some negative shades in the beginning. But finally my role will be much liked by the people. The script is so good that it has provided equal opportunities to all the characters. I am happy to work with such a big star as Shivaraj Kumar in my first Kannada film," the actress said.Jyothirmayi stressed that she shares a good rapport with her husband and that he never interferes in her professional life.

"My husband is a gem of a person. There is a good understanding between us. He realises the expectations of the industry from an actress like me. He never objects to me doing glamorous roles. It’s entirely up to me to accept or reject a role."

D Surya Prasad is the director and D Ramanaidu is producing the film under the Suresh Films’ banner. Ramanaidu said that the talkie part has almost been completed. "I still get compliments for my bikini shot in Billa. It’s been a while since its release, but my look in the film has received wide appreciation. I was given an option to wear a one-piece swimsuit if I was not okay with appearing in a bikini. But I was aware that I had the right attitude, so when I wore it for the shot, I was really comfortable. Rumours were there that I was paid a bomb for wearing the bikini, but there"s no truth in it. I will never wear a two-piece for a film again! I’ve done it once and I’m happy the audience accepted me. So if I did it again, I don’t think it’ll remain special. I also believe in doing things just once and I don’t believe in repeating my act," she revealed to a national news paper.

"I’ve been dragged into controversies unnecessarily. So I like to keep to myself and spend time with my family. I do my work, give it my best and head home. Because at the end of the day, it’s your work that matters. I haven’t thought about moving to Bollywood. Work here keeps me busy. When I’m not shooting, I watch films or hang out with friends. I’m very close to Ramya Krishnan and her family. She’s been with me through thick and thin. I like maintaining a balance between work and friends. I’m feeling very content right now and am happy staying down South," she said.

Nayantara plays a guest appearance in the upcoming Rajini movie Kuselan which will hit screens in July. It is the third time she acts opposite Superstar Rajinikanth. She has two songs alone and a couple of scenes with Rajini. She appears as Cleopatra in one song.
